Symptoms

• Check engine light
• engine misfiring
• on some vehicles the fault forces limp mode with reduced speed
• risk of catalytic converter damage if driven with the fault active.

Probable causes

• 1) Mechanical failure of the bank 2 air switching valve — physically jammed open
• most often by black sticky debris from a disintegrated air pump filter
• moisture intrusion into the system
• carbon buildup
• or general wear. 2) Faulty secondary air injection pump feeding debris/moisture into the valve. 3) Circuit problems — corroded or damaged electrical connections to the valve.

Diagnostic steps

1) Scan codes and check for companion secondary-air codes (e.g. P2440 for bank 1) to see if one bank or the whole system is affected. 2) Inspect the bank 2 air switching valve for physical blockage: look for black sticky debris (disintegrated air pump filter material), carbon buildup and moisture intrusion. 3) Inspect the air hoses for blockages and check for signs of moisture entering the system. 4) Verify the secondary air injection pump operates during a cold start and inspect it for internal disintegration/debris. 5) Examine electrical connections at the valve and pump for corrosion or damage. 6) Replace the stuck switching valve (and the air pump if it is the debris source), clear codes, and confirm the code does not reset on a cold-start drive cycle. 7) Do not defer the repair — driving with the valve stuck open risks overheating/melting the catalytic converters.
