Symptoms

• Check Engine light
• rough or uneven idle
• especially with the engine warm
• momentary loss of power or a subtle shudder under light load as the engine switches between activated and deactivated cylinder modes
• engine vibration
• decreased fuel economy because cylinders no longer deactivate.

Probable causes

• 1) Low engine oil level or low oil pressure — the most common cause. 2) Clogged/sludged oil passages preventing the deactivation solenoids and lifters from switching. 3) Worn or defective cylinder deactivation solenoid
• or shorted solenoid wiring. 4) Malfunctioning switching lifters. 5) ECU/module faults — communication errors or corrupted software.

Diagnostic steps

1) Check the engine oil level first and top up if low; verify the oil meets the specified grade. 2) Perform a manual (mechanical gauge) oil pressure test if the code persists after correcting the level. 3) Inspect oil passages for dirt and sludge — sources flag skipping this as the most common diagnostic mistake, since clogged passages reduce the pressure available to the deactivation solenoids and lifters. 4) With a scan tool, review live data and command the cylinder deactivation system; check the deactivation solenoid operation and its wiring for shorts. 5) If solenoids and oil supply are good, inspect the switching lifters on bank 1. 6) Check for ECU software updates/TSBs; reflash if applicable. 7) Repair the faulty component, clear the code and road-test through light-load conditions to confirm the deactivation mode transitions cleanly.
