Shift Fork B Position Circuit Range/Performance

Symptoms

  • Harsh or clunking shifts between gears
  • especially under load
  • delayed gear engagement (vehicle hesitates before a shift completes)
  • gear slipping sensation with momentary loss of drive torque
  • transmission service warning lamp
  • transmission limp mode (locked in a single gear).

Probable causes

1) Faulty shift fork "B" position sensor. 2) Damaged wiring or connector in the sensor circuit. 3) Internal TCM circuit fault or software/calibration error (most frequent cause on Ford DPS6 transmissions).

Diagnostic steps

  1. Connect a scan tool and read live data from the shift fork B position sensor.
  2. Check the sensor output voltage against expected values.
  3. Test wiring continuity and inspect connectors between the sensor and the TCM.
  4. Perform the manufacturer's shift-fork sensor recalibration / TCM reprogramming procedure โ€” software updates often resolve out-of-range readings.
  5. If the sensor is faulty, replace it and verify the new sensor's output before reassembly.
