Probable causes
1) Faulty shift fork position sensor. 2) Wiring or connector issues in the shift fork position circuit. 3) Contaminated transmission fluid. 4) Outdated TCM software. 5) Faulty TCM. 6) Internal transmission/shift fork assembly fault.
Diagnostic steps
- Read codes and freeze frame with a scan tool; note companion codes (e.g. P2833) that point to the same fork circuit.
- Check for TCM software updates/TSBs for the specific transmission — an outdated TCM calibration is a documented cause; reprogram if an update applies.
- Check transmission fluid condition and level; contaminated fluid can cause fork position faults.
- Inspect the shift fork position sensor wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion and poor connections.
- Monitor the fork 'A' position on live data while commanding shifts and compare against expected values.
- Replace the position sensor or repair the circuit as indicated; if the fault persists, suspect the TCM or internal transmission assembly. Do not continue driving with the code active — sources warn continued operation can force limp mode and destroy the clutch packs.
