Symptoms

• Harsh or delayed gear changes
• gear slipping (engine revs rise without matching vehicle speed)
• Check Engine Light or transmission warning lamp
• limp mode
• reduced drivability and sluggish acceleration
• poor fuel economy
• in severe cases the transmission may stay in a single gear until the engine is restarted.

Probable causes

• 1) The most common root cause is not the electrical part of the solenoid but foreign material obstructing its mechanical function or the fluid flow through the valve body. 2) Worn or internally failed pressure control solenoid. 3) Dirty or contaminated transmission fluid clogging the solenoid passages. 4) Damaged wiring
• corroded pins or loose connectors interrupting supply and ground to the solenoid. 5) Low system voltage (weak battery/alternator) starving the solenoid circuit. 6) TCM/PCM fault (rare).

Diagnostic steps

1. Scan for codes and record freeze frame data.
2. Check transmission fluid level and condition; if the fluid is dirty or contaminated, change it and remove the transmission pan for inspection — excessive debris or metal particles indicates internal mechanical failure requiring rebuild.
3. Inspect the solenoid harness and connectors for corrosion, broken wires and loose clips.
4. Measure the solenoid circuit resistance with a multimeter and compare against the manufacturer specification; an open-circuit (OL) reading confirms a broken circuit.
5. Use scan tool live data to compare solenoid D command versus response.
6. If the solenoid is confirmed faulty, replace it — on Toyota/Lexus the SLT solenoid requires removing the valve body from inside the oil pan.
7. Clear codes and road test through all gears.
