Engine Coolant Bypass Valve A Control Circuit/Open

Technical guide

Symptoms

  • Check engine light with P2681 stored or pending
  • poor heater performance / reduced cabin heat
  • slow engine warm-up or excessively long warm-up times
  • possible engine overheating
  • fluctuating coolant temperature gauge readings
  • coolant temperature sensor reading out of range in live data.

Probable causes

  • Faulty coolant bypass valve actuator (internal winding failure or mechanical binding creating the open-circuit condition)
  • corroded
  • chafed or damaged wiring and connectors between the ECM and the valve
  • coolant leakage causing water intrusion into the harness
  • ECM driver failure
  • software calibration mismatch after ECM reflash.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Retrieve the code and freeze-frame data with an OBD-II scanner.
  2. Visually inspect the bypass valve, actuator, connector and harness for coolant leaks, corrosion, chafed insulation or connector damage.
  3. With ignition off, measure the actuator circuit resistance (one source cites an expected range of 10-30 ohms; verify against the vehicle-specific spec).
  4. Apply 12 V directly to the actuator terminals to verify the valve physically moves; a valve that does not move indicates internal failure or binding.
  5. Monitor the valve position and coolant temperature in live data during engine operation.
  6. Measure the ECM output voltage at the harness while the engine runs; no command output with intact wiring points to the ECM.
  7. Repair wiring or replace the valve as indicated, clear codes and road-test to confirm normal warm-up and heater performance.
