Symptoms
- Check engine light
- rough or irregular idle with fluctuating engine speed
- single-cylinder misfire
- loss of power or hesitation under moderate load
- especially when accelerating from a stop
- possible engine stall at low speeds if the ECM cannot determine camshaft position accurately.
Probable causes
- 1) Damaged wiring or connectors in the camshaft position signal circuit (corrosion, broken wires, moisture intrusion, short to ground). 2) Faulty camshaft position sensor (cracked sensor housing dropping signal voltage). 3) Defective ECM/PCM output circuit or solder joint fatigue. 4) Less commonly
- mechanical issues such as a misaligned camshaft.
Diagnostic steps
- Scan for codes and freeze frame data; confirm P2615 and note any companion misfire codes.
- Visually inspect the camshaft position sensor wiring and connectors for corrosion, broken wires, moisture intrusion, and a cracked sensor housing.
- Check circuit continuity between the sensor and the ECM.
- Back-probe the sensor signal wire with a multimeter while cranking and compare the signal voltage against the manufacturer specification; a reading consistently below the minimum indicates a low-signal condition.
- With a scan tool, read the live data stream for the camshaft position sensor; if the ECM reports no data despite a healthy sensor and wiring, suspect the ECM output circuit.
- Repair wiring, replace the sensor, or address the ECM only after the circuit tests isolate the fault — do not replace parts before completing the wiring and ECM communication checks.
