Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Closed Bank 2

Technical guide

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • poor/rough idle
  • loss of low-end torque
  • engine surging
  • hesitation during acceleration
  • noticeable power loss at highway speeds
  • possible misfires from a rich mixture
  • reduced fuel economy.

Probable causes

  • Failed IMRC actuator or solenoid
  • faulty IMRC position sensor
  • mechanical failure or binding of the intake manifold runners (often from carbon buildup/coking on the flaps)
  • blocked vacuum lines
  • wiring or connector problems in the IMRC control circuit (including corroded actuator connectors)
  • rarely a faulty PCM.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Connect a scan tool, retrieve stored codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Clear codes and test drive to confirm the code resets.
  3. Visually inspect the intake manifold, IMRC actuator, vacuum lines and wiring for damage, disconnection or blockage.
  4. Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for the vehicle.
  5. Test the IMRC actuator solenoid and position sensor resistance with a multimeter against manufacturer specification.
  6. Inspect the runners/flaps for carbon buildup or mechanical binding and clean if necessary.
  7. Test continuity and resistance of the control circuit wiring between the actuator and PCM.
  8. Use a bidirectional scan tool to command the actuator and observe whether the runners actually move.
  9. Replace the failed actuator/solenoid, repair wiring, or repair the manifold runner mechanism as identified.

Cross-checked technical synthesis (QA). It does not replace the manufacturer's procedure.

AI here is a librarian: this page shows only what mechanics confirmed, or says “unknown”. It never suggests a diagnosis — MECCANIC interprets the code, never your car.
