Symptoms

• Check engine light illuminated
• transmission overheating with possible limp mode operation
• burning smell from overheated
• degrading fluid
• transmission slipping
• hard shifting
• reduced transmission performance.

Probable causes

• Low transmission fluid level
• malfunctioning transmission fluid temperature sensor
• blocked or damaged transmission cooler
• internal transmission problems causing slipping (excess friction heat)
• faulty transmission control module
• aggravating conditions such as towing heavy loads
• driving in high ambient temperatures
• or a malfunctioning engine cooling system.

Diagnostic steps

1. Scan for P1783 plus companion transmission codes and record freeze-frame data (fluid temperature at the time the code set).
2. Check transmission fluid level and condition; top up if low, and replace fluid and filter if burnt or contaminated.
3. Inspect the transmission cooler and its lines for blockages, kinks, or external damage; verify the engine cooling system is working correctly.
4. Test the transmission fluid temperature sensor and its wiring; compare live-data reading against actual fluid temperature and replace the sensor if implausible.
5. Road-test while monitoring live transmission temperature; if the transmission slips or shifts hard, pursue internal transmission diagnosis.
6. If fluid, cooler, and sensor all check good, evaluate the transmission control module.
7. Clear the code and confirm the temperature stays in range under load.
