Torque Converter Clutch System Performance

Probable causes
1) Faulty torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid — a frequent cause on Ford. 2) Sticking TCC control valve or worn valve bore in the valve body leaking pressure so fluid cannot hold the clutch engaged. 3) Low transmission fluid level. 4) Damaged/failed torque converter.
Diagnostic steps
- Check transmission fluid level and condition; correct level before further diagnosis.
- Scan for companion transmission codes and monitor TCC slip with live data.
- Test the TCC solenoid operation.
- Inspect the valve body for a sticking TCC control valve or worn valve bore.
- If solenoid and valve body check out and slip persists, the torque converter itself is the likely failure — replace it. Note: the code is severe for drivability; driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing or the engine runs poorly.
