Vehicle Speed Sensor Intermittent

Symptoms
- Illuminated check engine light
- erratic speedometer readings
- erratic transmission shifts
- power loss at low engine loads and issues at varying speeds
- vehicle may enter limp mode with limited speed and performance.
Probable causes
- 1) Faulty vehicle speed sensor. 2) Damaged wiring or connectors in the VSS circuit. 3) Poor electrical connections or poor ground at the sensor connector. 4) In rare cases
- a malfunctioning PCM.
Diagnostic steps
- Scan for codes and freeze frame data; identify which speed sensor (OSS, transfer case, rear axle) feeds the intermittent signal.
- Visually inspect the VSS wiring and connectors for damage, chafing, and loose connections.
- Test the VSS output with a lab scope or multimeter while rotating the drive wheels or driving, watching for signal dropouts.
- Check for proper ground at the vehicle speed sensor connector.
- Repair wiring or clean connections as found; replace the VSS if its output is faulty or intermittent.
- If sensor and circuit test good, check PCM connections; suspect the PCM only as a last resort. Driving with this code active is not recommended due to erratic shifting and limp mode risk.
