Symptoms

Probable causes
- On Hyundai/Kia
- ordered by probability: 1) Internal engine bearing or piston ring failure — manufacturing defects (improperly heat-treated piston rings, oiling issues) causing premature connecting rod bearing and cylinder wall wear. 2) Severe oil starvation or sludge accelerating internal bearing wear. 3) The knock sensor itself is extremely rarely the cause on these vehicles — replacing it is a common misdiagnosis and will not fix the underlying mechanical issue.
Diagnostic steps
- Confirm the vehicle is a Hyundai/Kia with KSDS logic; on other makes (e.g. Audi/VW) P1327 has a different meaning and this procedure does not apply.
- Do NOT clear the code — dealerships require the active code and freeze-frame data to approve the extended 15-year/150,000-mile warranty claim on affected Hyundai/Kia engines.
- Advise the customer not to continue driving; the vehicle should be towed to a dealership — driving in limp mode can destroy the catalytic converter.
- Check applicable TSBs: Kia TSB SC209Y covers engine long block replacement for 2020-2021 Kia Soul and Seltos exhibiting piston ring noise or DTC P1327.
- If the code stores after the ECM logic improvement update, the documented remedy is complete engine long block replacement under the manufacturer program — not sensor replacement.
