Probable causes
- 1) Faulty transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch (worn by heat, vibration, or fluid contamination). 2) Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors in the sensor circuit (moisture, road salt). 3) Low or contaminated transmission fluid (leaks, neglected maintenance). 4) Internal hydraulic/mechanical issues: internal leaks
- cracked balls in the valve body
- low operating pressure
- stuck valve. 5) Defective PCM/TCM (least common).
Diagnostic steps
- Scan for codes and record freeze frame data.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition first โ fluid problems are among the most common causes; correct any leaks and replace contaminated fluid.
- Inspect the transmission wiring harness and connectors at the sensor for damage, corrosion, or loose pins; repair as needed.
- Test the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch per the manufacturer procedure and replace if out of specification.
- If sensor and circuit test good, investigate internal hydraulic causes (valve body condition, stuck valve, low operating pressure).
- Suspect the PCM/TCM only after all other checks pass.
