Probable causes

  • 1) Faulty transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch (worn by heat, vibration, or fluid contamination). 2) Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors in the sensor circuit (moisture, road salt). 3) Low or contaminated transmission fluid (leaks, neglected maintenance). 4) Internal hydraulic/mechanical issues: internal leaks
  • cracked balls in the valve body
  • low operating pressure
  • stuck valve. 5) Defective PCM/TCM (least common).

Diagnostic steps

  1. Scan for codes and record freeze frame data.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition first โ€” fluid problems are among the most common causes; correct any leaks and replace contaminated fluid.
  3. Inspect the transmission wiring harness and connectors at the sensor for damage, corrosion, or loose pins; repair as needed.
  4. Test the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch per the manufacturer procedure and replace if out of specification.
  5. If sensor and circuit test good, investigate internal hydraulic causes (valve body condition, stuck valve, low operating pressure).
  6. Suspect the PCM/TCM only after all other checks pass.
