Symptoms

Probable causes
- 1) Defective output speed sensor (internal coil damage, contamination or bearing wear stopping pulse generation). 2) Defective sensor connector or wiring: corrosion
- chafing or broken pins in the sensor-to-TCM harness interrupting the pulse signal. 3) Defective shift solenoids. 4) Defective transmission valve body. 5) PCM/TCM fault (rare).
Diagnostic steps
- Scan for codes and record freeze frame information, then test drive to duplicate the code-setting conditions, watching engine load, throttle position, RPM and road speed.
- Check the output speed sensor signal on live scan data while driving; a missing signal with the vehicle moving confirms the fault.
- Visually inspect the OSS sensor connector and harness for corrosion, chafing, broken pins or damaged wiring.
- Perform continuity checks on the sensor circuit wiring to the TCM/PCM.
- Verify sensor pulse output with an oscilloscope; replace the sensor if it produces no pulses.
- If the sensor and circuit test good, investigate shift solenoids and the valve body per the manufacturer's procedure.
- Clear codes and road test to confirm.
