Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Technical guide

Symptoms

  • Check engine light

Probable causes

  • Catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1
  • worn catalytic converter
  • faulty downstream O2 sensor
  • oil/coolant contamination of catalyst
  • exhaust leak before downstream sensor
  • rich running condition damaging catalyst

Diagnostic steps

  1. Check pre/post cat O2 sensor live data.
  2. Post-cat should show stable ~0.6-0.7V (not oscillating like pre-cat).
  3. Fix any oil burning or coolant leaks first.
  4. Fix rich conditions.
  5. Replace downstream O2 sensor if faulty (cheaper first step).
  6. Replace catalytic converter if genuinely inefficient.
