Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

Technical guide

Symptoms

  • Low-power engine operation such as idling and cruising may or may not be affected
  • high-power engine operation such as heavy acceleration and high speed may be severely debilitated
  • abnormal forced-induction noises
  • exhaust smoke
  • elevated engine temperatures
  • erratic boost pressure gauge readings (if equipped)

Probable causes

  • Air leaks in intake manifold
  • turbocharger
  • intercooler
  • or vacuum control preventing proper pressure buildup
  • stuck or leaking wastegate preventing proper boost pressure regulation
  • worn turbocharger bearings
  • damaged impeller blades or lubrication problems
  • water intrusion or corrosion affecting sensor signals
  • faulty pressure sensor

Diagnostic steps

  1. Verify engine condition; replace fouled spark plugs if needed.
  2. Inspect all air intake hoses, intercooler lines, and vacuum lines for leaks and secure connections.
  3. Check turbocharger-to-intake flange connection for leaks.
  4. Clear codes and retest.
  5. Connect boost gauge and snap throttle to 5,000 rpm to measure pressure.
  6. Based on readings, diagnose wastegate operation or perform electrical voltage testing on sensor circuits.
