Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range/Performance

Technical guide

Symptoms

  • lack of power
  • rough idle
  • idle speed too high or too low

Probable causes

  • clogged or cracked vacuum line to the sensor
  • electrical problems with the sensor wiring or connector or PCM power supply
  • faulty MAP/BARO sensor
  • dirty throttle body
  • problems with the EGR system
  • bad mass airflow sensor (MAF)
  • PCV system problems
  • engine mechanical problems
  • clogged catalytic converter or blocked exhaust
  • PCM software needs to be updated

Diagnostic steps

  1. With ignition ON, check the +5V reference voltage and ground at the sensor using a voltmeter.
  2. Check signal voltage with ignition key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  3. Using a scan tool in Data Monitor mode, check MAP sensor reading with engine OFF — it should match the BARO sensor reading.
  4. At idle, reading should be around 15-20 inches Hg.
  5. Apply vacuum to the sensor and observe if reading changes.
  6. If reading does not change, the sensor is bad or clogged.
