Symptoms

• ABS and traction control warning lights on
• "loss of communication" with the ABS module on the scan tool
• ABS pump motor stuck on / running continuously (humming or buzzing noise)
• intermittent brake system functionality
• erratic or dead speedometer reported on some trucks.

Probable causes

• Internal ABS control module failure: solder joint failure from thermal stress and vibration
• degraded internal connections and components (wear and tear)
• corrupted module software
• voltage spikes or water damage
• corrosion on battery terminals or chassis ground points creating voltage drops/spikes that damage the module electronics.

Diagnostic steps

1. Scan the ABS module and record the exact code and sub-code (e.g. C2200-49); verify whether the module communicates at all.
2. Check battery terminals and chassis ground points for corrosion and clean/repair - voltage drops and spikes from bad grounds can damage or falsely trip the module.
3. Verify whether the ABS pump is running continuously (audible hum from the module area) - a classic sign of internal module failure.
4. Inspect ABS module wiring and connectors for shorts or damage before condemning the module.
5. If the fault is internal, repair or replace the ABS control module: options are an OEM replacement (requires programming to the vehicle) or professional circuit-board-level rebuild of the original module (no reprogramming needed).
6. Clear codes and road test to confirm the ABS/traction lights stay off and communication is stable.
