Symptoms

• Stability control / traction control warning light illuminated on the dashboard
• loss of stability control functionality
• possible loss of traction control assistance.

Probable causes

• Faulty steering wheel angle sensor or its harness open/shorted (most common, frequently paired with C1278)
• poor electrical connection in the steering angle sensor circuit
• damaged wheel speed sensors or wiring
• faulty stability control module
• missing steering angle sensor calibration after a wheel alignment or sensor replacement.

Diagnostic steps

1. Scan ALL modules with a professional scan tool and record every accompanying code, especially ABS/traction codes - C1963 is secondary and the primary code (e.g. C1278 steering angle sensor, wheel speed sensor codes) identifies the real fault.
2. Diagnose and repair the primary code first.
3. Visually inspect the steering angle sensor wiring harness and connectors; check for broken, bent, pushed-out or corroded pins.
4. Inspect the wheel speed sensors and wiring at all four wheels for damage, corrosion or disconnection.
5. Verify battery voltage and charging system condition.
6. With the scan tool, compare actual steering input against live steering angle sensor data.
7. If the vehicle recently had a wheel alignment or the sensor was replaced, perform the steering angle sensor calibration with a capable scan tool - the code persists until calibration is completed.
8. Clear codes and road test to confirm the repair.
