Symptoms
- Traction control / stability control (VSC) warning light illuminated
- steering wheel may sit off-center
- potential degraded vehicle stability control operation.
Probable causes
- 1) Zero point calibration not performed — front wheel alignment or steering wheel centered position was adjusted and the steering/yaw rate sensor zero point was not re-acquired afterward
- the skid control ECU detects the difference between the old and new zero point and sets the code. 2) Poor adjustment of the steering wheel centered position. 3) Poor front wheel alignment adjustment. 4) Faulty steering angle sensor. 5) Damaged wiring or connectors. 6) Yaw rate/deceleration sensor zero point calibration incomplete.
Diagnostic steps
- Read the code with a capable scan tool and note whether it returns immediately after clearing.
- Verify the steering wheel is centered and check front wheel alignment; correct alignment if out of spec.
- Inspect the steering angle sensor wiring and connectors for damage.
- Perform the zero point calibration procedure for the steering angle sensor and the yaw rate/deceleration sensor per the factory repair manual (required after any alignment or steering adjustment).
- Confirm proper steering angle sensor operation in live data.
- If the code persists after calibration and wiring checks, suspect the steering angle sensor itself.
