Symptoms
- ABS
- VSC and BRAKE warning lights illuminated
- loss of traction/stability control
- on hybrids
- regenerative braking is disabled while conventional braking still works
- erratic braking behavior or reduced braking performance in severe cases.
Probable causes
1) Failed brake pedal stroke sensor itself. 2) Faulty stroke sensor wiring or connectors (damage, corrosion, moisture intrusion). 3) Issues with the ABS hydraulic unit / skid control module. 4) Electrical problems such as short circuits or power supply faults. 5) Stroke sensor replaced without performing Zero Point Calibration (code returns immediately).
Diagnostic steps
- Read codes with a capable scan tool and confirm C1247 plus any accompanying chassis codes.
- Visually inspect the stroke sensor, its wiring and connectors at the brake pedal for damage, corrosion or moisture.
- Test the wiring and connectors for opens, shorts and poor contact.
- If the sensor is faulty, replace it.
- Perform the Zero Point Calibration procedure with a bidirectional scan tool after any sensor replacement — skipping it causes the code to return immediately.
- Clear codes and road test to confirm the ABS/VSC/BRAKE lights stay off. Do not leave this unrepaired: ABS and stability control remain disabled while the code is present.
