Symptoms

• ABS
• Traction Control (TRAC) and VSC warning lights on simultaneously
• sometimes with the general Brake light
• standard hydraulic braking still works but ABS and stability control are disabled
• brake pedal may feel different
• frequently appears after a 12V battery replacement or disconnection.

Probable causes

• 1) Low system voltage — a weak 12V battery or charging system fault is the most frequent trigger of this communication failure. 2) Lost calibration/memory after battery disconnection or replacement (must be re-learned with a diagnostic tool). 3) Damaged or corroded wiring in the ECM communication circuit
• loose or poor connections between the ECM and ABS module (broken, bent, pushed-out, or corroded connector pins). 4) ECM or ABS module fault.

Diagnostic steps

1. Test the 12V battery and charging system first — low voltage is the most frequent cause of this code.
2. Ask whether the battery was recently replaced or disconnected; if so, perform the required calibration/re-learn (e.g. zero-point calibration) with a capable scan tool and recheck.
3. Connect a Toyota-compatible scan tool (Techstream) and review live data from both the ABS module and ECM to confirm the communication fault.
4. Inspect the ECM communication circuit wiring and connectors; check pins for being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded; repair as needed.
5. Clear the code and retest; if communication cannot be restored with good wiring and voltage, diagnose the ECM/ABS module per the factory procedure.
6. Treat as a priority repair: the code disables ABS and stability control.
