Symptoms

• Airbag (SRS) warning light stays illuminated on the dashboard
• the airbag system is deactivated as a fail-safe
• so the driver's airbag may not deploy in a collision. A dead horn or inoperative steering wheel buttons together with the airbag light strongly indicates a failed clock spring (spiral cable).

Probable causes

• Spiral cable (clock spring) malfunction - reported as the most frequent cause
• instrument panel wiring issues
• failure of the driver side squib 2nd step (airbag inflator circuit)
• center airbag sensor assembly malfunction
• damaged wiring harness or connectors
• water/moisture intrusion causing shorts in the airbag circuits.

Diagnostic steps

1. Read the code with a scanner capable of SRS/manufacturer body codes and confirm B1811 with any sub-code.
2. Check horn and steering wheel button operation - if inoperative together with the airbag light, prioritize the spiral cable (clock spring).
3. Disconnect the battery and wait per manufacturer procedure before working on any SRS component.
4. Inspect the instrument panel wiring and connectors in the driver airbag circuit for damage, looseness, corrosion or moisture intrusion.
5. Test the spiral cable and replace if faulty.
6. If the spiral cable and wiring test good, evaluate the driver airbag module (squib 2nd step) per the manufacturer diagnostic procedure.
7. If the fault persists, evaluate the center airbag sensor assembly.
8. Clear the code and verify the SRS light extinguishes. Treat as high severity: the SRS is disabled while the code is active.
