Symptoms

• Airbag warning light stays illuminated
• passenger airbag disabled (system defaults to 'passenger airbag off', so it may not deploy in an accident)
• possible issues with the seat belt reminder system.

Probable causes

• 1) Defective OCS sensor mat integrated in the passenger seat cushion (the most common failure, subject of Kia/Hyundai TSBs and warranty extension campaigns). 2) Wiring or connector issues under the seat. 3) Sensor calibration problems. 4) False triggers: electronic devices (phones, laptops, inverters, GPS, MP3 players) placed on or around the passenger seat cushion
• or liquid spilled on the seat cushion.

Diagnostic steps

1. Retrieve the code with a capable scanner and confirm the vehicle make — B1448 has different meanings per manufacturer.
2. Before complex diagnostics, remove any electronic devices from on/around the passenger seat and verify the seat cushion is completely dry, then clear the code and retest.
3. Inspect the OCS wiring and connectors under the passenger seat for damage or corrosion.
4. Perform sensor calibration if the manufacturer procedure calls for it.
5. If the fault persists, the official repair is replacement of the OCS sensor mat integrated in the seat cushion (labor-intensive: seat removal and upholstery disassembly).
