Symptoms

• Service engine oil / oil change reminder light stays illuminated even after fresh oil has been added
• reset button does nothing or only causes the light to flash without resetting
• erratic oil change reminder system behavior
• other warning lights may occasionally appear.

Probable causes

• 1) Faulty reset switch — internal corrosion
• worn contacts
• or a broken spring keeping the switch closed and tying the circuit to battery voltage. 2) Damaged wiring or corroded connectors — pinched wires or chafed insulation creating a direct path to battery. 3) Internal control module failure (e.g. burnt MOSFET or cracked PCB trace) falsely reporting a short to battery. 4) Software glitches or calibration errors in the module.

Diagnostic steps

1. Retrieve the code with a scan tool and confirm the exact definition for the vehicle make (B-codes vary by manufacturer).
2. Visually inspect the reset button assembly and the surrounding wiring harness for physical damage, chafed insulation, and corroded connectors.
3. Test voltage and continuity on the button signal wire circuit to locate a short to battery.
4. Bench-test the switch in isolation.
5. Access module live data to verify the button input responds when pressed.
6. Repair wiring or replace the switch as found; perform module re-programming/calibration if needed.
7. If all electrical tests pass but the fault persists, suspect the control module.
8. Clear the code and retest.
