Symptoms

• Check engine / warning light illuminated
• possibly no noticeable drivability change unless the failure is severe
• reported symptoms include stalling
• difficulty starting
• loss of power
• misfires and poor fuel efficiency
• if the code originates in the ABS module
• braking-related symptoms may be present.

Probable causes

• Abnormal system voltages damaging the controller (most common cause - charging system faults)
• damaged
• burnt or corroded wiring and connectors
• water intrusion
• corrosion or overheating of the module
• internal module failure from wear over time
• ABS module communication issues with the braking system.

Diagnostic steps

1. Check the system voltage and the condition/operation of the charging system components - this should always be the first step for B1342.
2. Scan all modules and identify exactly which module reported the code, noting any related codes.
3. Thoroughly inspect the module's connectors, wiring and grounds for damage, burning, corrosion or water intrusion, and repair as needed.
4. Clear the code and retest - a reset may temporarily clear it, but if the ECU is truly defective the code will return.
5. If the code returns with wiring, grounds and system voltage confirmed good, replace the defective module with a new or refurbished unit and perform the required programming/configuration.
