Symptoms

• Warning lamps / battery-service light on the instrument cluster
• dim or flickering interior and exterior lights
• slow power-window and power-lock operation
• slow engine cranking
• hard starting or no-start.

Probable causes

• Weak
• aged
• sulfated or discharged battery
• charging system defects (alternator, charging control module, fuses)
• loose
• corroded
• burnt
• shorted or disconnected battery terminals
• cables
• ground straps or power-supply wiring
• excessive electrical load
• often from aftermarket accessories (driving lights, audio systems) or their improper installation
• incorrect battery rating for the vehicle
• very low ambient temperature temporarily pulling battery voltage below the trigger point (code may appear only in winter)
• failed module or corrupted module calibration causing a false low-voltage reading (rare).

Diagnostic steps

1. Connect a scan tool, confirm B1318 and record any additional codes and which module(s) report it.
2. Inspect battery terminals, cables and ground straps for looseness, corrosion and damage; clean and tighten.
3. Load-test the battery and verify it is the correct rating for the vehicle; replace if weak.
4. Test the charging system (alternator output) thoroughly.
5. With a multimeter, probe the power and ground pins at the module that logged B1318 - the reading should be within +/-0.2V of battery voltage; if not, trace and repair the supply or ground wiring.
6. Check for parasitic drains, including aftermarket accessories and their installation.
7. Clear the code and re-test; suspect the module itself only after all supply-side causes are eliminated. Do not return the vehicle to service until the charging system tests good - the vehicle can stall without warning on battery power alone.
