Symptoms

• Steady or flashing SRS/airbag warning light that stays on after restart
• airbag readiness shows the driver frontal airbag as not ready. No engine
• transmission or chassis symptoms. Safety-critical: the driver frontal airbag will not deploy in a frontal collision while the fault is active.

Probable causes

• 1) Faulty driver airbag (squib circuit). 2) Driver airbag harness open or shorted — often at the clockspring behind the steering wheel or connectors in the circuit. 3) Poor electrical connection in the deployment circuit — bent pins
• corroded contacts
• damaged harness. 4) Fault in the airbag control module communication path with crash sensors.

Diagnostic steps

1. Read the code with an SRS-capable scan tool and record the exact subcode (short to ground / short to battery / open / resistance below threshold) — it points to the failure type.
2. Disable the SRS per the manufacturer procedure (disconnect battery and wait the specified time) before any work on the circuit.
3. Inspect the driver airbag connectors and the clockspring circuit behind the steering wheel for bent pins, corrosion and damage.
4. Check the harness between the airbag module and the driver airbag for opens or shorts per the subcode.
5. Repair the wiring/connection or replace the faulty component (clockspring or driver airbag) as identified.
6. Clear the code, cycle the ignition and confirm the SRS light extinguishes. Do not continue driving with this code active — the driver airbag is disabled.
