The calculated soot load continues to increase; active regeneration starts but then stops or fails to reduce the value. This frequently occurs in vehicles with many cold starts and short journeys, or after work has been done on the exhaust system.

Two questions differentiate the cases: (1) Is it a REAL or MISCALCULATED soot load? Faulty differential pressure hoses/sensors cause the ECU to "see" non-existent soot – these should be checked first; (2) if it is real: what is causing the regeneration interruption? Exhaust temperature sensors that report low values at the regeneration temperature are a frequently documented culprit; oil level/condition (frequent regenerations dilute the oil – check the level first); insufficient driving conditions. If below the permissible soot threshold, a forced regeneration with the tester after rectifying the cause will resolve it; if above the threshold, professional cleaning or replacement is required.
