Documented areas, in order of reported frequency: (1) NOx sensors — especially the downstream sensor, which "sees" efficiency; its drift when hot is a very frequently confirmed cause; comparing upstream/downstream data in real-time at operating temperature, with temporary deactivation of dosing from the tester, separates the sensor from the catalyst; (2) actual quality of dosing — a partially crystallized urea injector sprays poorly even with correct flow: visually inspect the spray pattern; (3) mixer/crystal deposits in the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst; (4) aged SCR catalyst — last on the list, only after excluding sensors.
