On the EA288 engine, experience shows that P0401 with a functioning valve is almost always caused by issues elsewhere in the system: (1) the low-pressure EGR cooler partially clogged with deposits; (2) stuck anti-return valves (reed valves); (3) the low-pressure pipe to the intake valve half-blocked with oily soot; (4) the sampling tube after the DPF. Disconnecting the LP-EGR pipe is the most direct diagnostic method – a visual inspection immediately reveals the problem. Mechanical cleaning + new reed valve kit where necessary, clearing adaptations, and flow testing with a scanner. Tightening torques during reassembly: according to official documentation.
